With our second six hour trip behind us today, Christmas feels nearly officially over. I’ve still got to get the tree down and put all of the ornaments up– and I really want to reoganize a few closets, but in the name of “rest” and “holiday” I plan on curling up for at least a few hours this week and getting some reading in!
Our family loves books! (I actually had to buy a special rider on our home insurance for Spencer’s study and estimated that he owns about $10,000 worth of books! Of course, that’s 18 years of a pastor collecting!) Thankfully, we usually get a few books for Christmas. Here are a few titles that someone in our family received this Christmas that I plan on getting my grubby little hands on:
Heaven by Randy Alcorn– A gift from my folks to my husband. I’ve read the first two chapters, and I am EXCITED! We heard Randy Alcorn speak on money/possessions a few years ago and loved it! I think he may be an even better writer than he is a speaker.
Worship Matters by Bob Kauffman– A gift from our choir director and good friend Linda. We discovered Bob Kauffman a few years ago at the Bethlehem Pastor’s Conference where there was a whole table of his CDs available. Since then, I have downloaded many a song from Sovereign Grace Music.) I’ve already read the first chapter and I am realizing I need to get a highlighter pen and read it more slowly. Great stuff!)
Shepherds Abiding by Jan Karon– A gift from my husband to myself during our Christmas Eve book exchange.) I’ve actually already read this book TWICE, but it is my favorite of all the Mitford series and I LOVE to read it at Christmas time. I read half of it outloud to the Spencer and the kids on the way to Arkansas last week. Such a sweet book.
Do the Right Thing by Mike Huckabee. My gift to Truett for our Christmas Eve book exchange, this book is an autobiography. Truett and I share a love for biographies and I can’t wait to get my hands on it after Truett is done.
So what about you? Any of you get any great books for Christmas? Want to share/swap with me? 🙂
Jan Karon invites you to visit her website at http://www.mitfordbooks.com. I know you wil enjoy the site!
My husband brought “Worship Matters” home to me after a Together for the Gospel conference. It is an excellent book!
I read the first two Twilight books and decided not to read any more. My younger sisters love them, so I thought I should see what the fuss is about. I was disappointed. The two main characters seem to be very self-absorbed and foolish. That’s not love. Or, at least, it isn’t what love ought to be.
I love all things Christmas. And I love books! When they’re combined, it’s all the more special. This year I received four: “Small Town Christmas” by Debbie Macomber; “The Christmas Box,” by Richard Paul Evans (Am I the only one who hasn’t read this best seller yet?); “The Christmas Sweater,” by Glenn Beck; and “Grace,” also by Richard Paul Evans. Am eager to get into them. Though I may save one or two for next year’s Christmas season.
THANKS! for the recommendation of the book, “Secrets about Guys that shouldn’t be secret”. My girls and I are reading/fighting over it…where will it be?! On a bed, on a desk, in the bathroom :), on a couch, in the kitchen?! I could get more copies, but that would take the fun out of sharing!
Blessings to you and your family during the new year!
I read “Twilight” and “New Moon” a few weeks ago, and just started “Eclipse” yesterday. I picked up “Twilight” because my oldest (who just turned 12) wanted to read it because a few of her friends are. I wanted to preview it first, and boy am I glad I did! I told her when she is older she can read it but not now. I don’t want my impressionable 12 year old to think it’s ok to have a boy alone with her in her room, for starters!
However, I think your idea of reading them first and deciding for your daughter yourself is wise.
So glad you’re enjoying “Worship Matters” – I’m still reading it and digesting it as I go along. the highlighter is a great idea. I got a little paperback from my sister in law called “Getting to No – How to Break a Stubborn Habit” by Erwin Lutz and published by Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (is she trying to tell me something? More likely God is). I didn’t think I’d like it but God is using it to get my life in the direction of more “together,” PTL. I bought Jonathan two Mike Huckabee books for Christmas – the one you have and one called “Character Counts” (which I read between the time I bought it and Christmas). I love the way he writes – he’s so open. One might think he’s bragging when he describes what he did when he was becoming governor, but then he talks about how everything good we do and have comes from God and really takes no credit whatsoever for it himself. Can’t wait to read “Do the Right Thing.” I also love the Jan Karon books and have one I haven’t read but can’t remember which one it is. Michelle, any time you want to borrow, just let me know!
Oh, I forgot to comment on the Randy Alcorn book, “Heaven.” I have it also and read it a couple of years ago. It is WONDERFUL! I love the way he writes. I have bunches of his books, mostly fiction. They are impossible to put down. I also have his “Pro-Life Answers to Pro-Choice Arguments” that is SO good – it totally itemizes in great detail what pro-abortion people argue and just blows all these ideas out of the water with sound doctrine and facts.
